Alice is a small town which is located on the southwestern bank of the Tyume River in Eastern Cape Province in South Africa. It was basically the Glasgow Missionary Society which started a mission station in 1824 which is Alice of today. The name of the town comes from the name of Princess Alice, who was the daughter of Queen Victoria. The town became a seat of magistracy in the year 1847 and was given the status of a town in the year 1852. The Lovedale Training College and the Fort Hare University that is the oldest black African university is also located near the town of Alice. On the coastal plateau that surrounds the town, livestock, citrus fruits and tobacco flourish.
