Amsterdam is located in the province of North Holland and is capital and the largest city of the Netherlands. The name of the city is derived from the words Amstel dam which means a dam on the River Amstel. The River Amstel flows into the city from the south. The present city of Amsterdam is not what it started as in the late 12th century, a small fishing village. The city is the financial and the cultural capital of the country too. However, the annual precipitation is averagely around 760 mm and is mostly in the form of drizzle, light rain, mostly in the months from October to March.
